A backplate together with a wing and harness is the most fundamental piece of your rig. Nowadays we are spoiled for choice in terms of a backplate's material, shape and weight, and there are many considerations on deciding which one to buy.

Backplate material - backplates are made out of stainless steel, anodised aluminium, aluminium magnesium alloy or softer polymer compound. The main reason for using different alloys is to save some weight - especially when you travel a lot. Backplates are also produced in different thickness of the material, and you need to choose which one works better for you.

Skeleton backplates or solid piece - The days of a single piece backplate are long gone. Although a lot of divers will still use them, there is an increasing trend towards skeleton or cut-out backplates. Skeleton or cut-out backplates will save your weight. IF you are after ultralight backplate, you will need to consider soft, polymer or fibre backplates.

Backplate accessories - you can attach to your backplates such as butt plates, backplate padding and different types of canisters.

Mikes Dive Store offers a comprehensive selection of backplates for recreational and technical diving applications. Not sure which one to buy - drop us a line, chat or call us.
