The Agulhas Current, a warm 'ocean river' that flows down the eastern flank of South Africa from Mozambique, has intrigued seafarers for centuries. Early Portuguese explorers named this place Agulhas because they noticed that the compass needle defied the distinction between true and magnetic north. This name could also have come from the needle-like boulders scattered around this area.
