The problem with the majority of dive computers in a multi purpose smart device world is that they are just that, just a dive computer. The Garmin Descent Mk1 Silver is something new, a smart dive computer that is capable of doing so much more than telling you how much no deco time you have left and recording your dive profile data.
On its own it is an impressive compact watch style dive computer with a full colour display, 3 axis compass, GPS for entry and exit position logging, multi mode support for diving, apnea, multi gas and gauge functions, a large memory for dive logs and a host of other features but it is also a multi-sport watch with a wrist heart rate monitor and fitness functions and so can be used for much more than diving and wearing as a basic watch. Garmin provide a range of free to download apps, watch faces and other customisable elements from the Garmin Connect IQ store that allow you to tailor the display and the watch functions to suit your taste and lifestyle. It can also be used with a range of additional Garmin sensors to extend the Descent's capabilities.
The Descent Mk1 housing is made from a fibre reinforced polymer to make it strong but also lightweight, a sapphire crystal display lens and the bezel is a marine grade stainless steel for a stylish and durable finish. It is supplied with a black silicone wrist band but other colours are also available separately and easily swapped over thanks to the QuickFit system. It uses a rechargeable battery like any good smart device should and provides the following battery run times before it'll need a charge depending on use:
- Dive mode: Up to 40 hours
- Watch mode: Up to 21 days
- Smartwatch mode: Up to 12 days
- GPS/HR Activity mode: Up to 20 hours
- UltraTrac™ mode: Up to 30 hours
